The Senior Outdoor Reflection Trips provide Harvard seniors with a meaningful opportunity for reflection and adventure before graduation. During a two-night trip in May led by senior FOP and HOC leaders, participants experience the beauty of the White or Berkshire Mountains, process their journeys at Harvard, and get to know an amazing group of their classmates. The program is designed for any senior regardless of outdoor experience, as participants have the choice between backpacking trips, campsite-based front country trips, or a cabin-based trip. The program is SEF eligible.

Trips leave on the last day of exams, Saturday, May 18th, in the early afternoon and return on Monday, May 20th before Senior Week begins. Seniors who have afternoon exams should be in touch with SORT organizers to determine evening departures on May 18th.

FAQS

Q: How do I sign up?
A: Registration is live! You can sign up here. The deadline for registration is Sunday, April 28th at 11:59pm.

Q: How much does the trip cost?
A: With support from the College, we’re very excited to offer these trips much below their actual cost. The cost of the trip this year is $70, and this price factors in the cost of the three-day trip including transportation, accommodation, food and gear. Additionally, this program is SEF-eligible! If you are not SEF-eligible, the cost will be added to your term bill.

Q: I don’t have any outdoor experience, is this still for me?
A: Absolutely! When you sign up for SORT, you’ll have the chance to specify the type and difficulty of trip that you want to go on. Ordered from most to least technical, we offer backcountry trips, campsite-based front country trips, or a cabin-based trip.

Q: Can I sign up with my friends?
A: We encourage you to get your friends to sign up as well, however we can’t fulfill requests to place people on the same trip. The program prioritizes making sure each participant is on a trip type and difficulty that they requested, and SORT also aims to help seniors get to know new people in their class. With that said, you may put the names down of those you know are signing up for SORT on your registration form if you would like to be placed on the same trip (just make sure that both individuals mutually list the other on their respective form). We cannot accommodate all requests, but we will try to ensure that you are placed with at least one person you have listed.

Q: Will I be able to rent gear for my trip?
A: Yes! SORT is excited to partner with both FOP and HOC to ensure that each participant has all the gear they need for their trip. Check out the packing list on this page and if you’re missing anything, stay tuned for emails about when you can come rent the gear you need!
